Tribe will be horrid, but no pushovers

By Nick Carrabine

Well, the Cleveland Indians finally signed that “big” free agent everyone was waiting for this summer.

Russell “I’ll either strike out or hit the ball 500 feet while pulling my back out” Branyan is back (and unfortunately for him) donning a Tribe uniform.

Let’s get this straight, Branyan isn’t exactly the second coming of Mark McGwire.

No, Branyan is actually the fourth coming of Branyan.

Danny Ferry, the thief

By Nick Carrabine
NCarrabine@News-Herald.com

For the third time in the past year and a half, Danny Ferry has robbed an NBA franchise.

First it was Damon Jones and Joe Smith for Mo Williams in the summer of 2008, then Ben Wallace and Sasha Pavlovic for Shaquille O’Neal in the summer of 2009 and finally, Wednesday’s blockbuster deal involving Zydrunas Ilgauskas and a first-rounder for Antawn Jamison and Sebasian Telfair.

In case you haven’t caught on yet, here is how Danny Ferry does business: “Here’s a bum, now give me your best player, punk.”

Winter Olympics, you say?

When I was younger, I used to pretend to be a figure skater with my roller blades in the cul-de-sac. I loved watching the Nancy Kerrigan, Michelle Kwan, Tara Lipinski and Kristi Yamaguchi during the Winter Olympics, and I've always been a hockey fan (my dad is still playing at 56).

But I was not one of the 32.6 million people watching the opening ceremony; I was at the movies. I don't really care that I missed it, and I don't know when any events are airing. I'll probably catch some of it while channel surfing, but the Winter Olympics just aren't as exciting as the Summer Olympics. Maybe it's because there aren't as many sports, or because there aren't as many well-known athletes competing. As I'm typing this, my co-worker tells me the U.S. already has four medals. I didn't even know they had started competing.

I like watching sports (and participating in college football pick'ems), but right now my attention just isn't focused on Vancouver. I'm more excited about the Cavs' near-franchise-record win streak, and the fact that pitchers and catchers report to spring training Feb. 21.

Deal or no deal?

With the trade deadline approaching, the Cavaliers, like last year, are put in a tough position.

Going into the all-star break, they yet again have the best record in the Eastern conference and are the hottest team in the NBA.

While wins in January and February are nice, it's the wins in May and June that matter most, and that is why team general manager, Danny Ferry is exploring all options.
